Lotus-V2-Outline_978Henry Carpenter (1943-2023)

In June, my pickleball partner for life passed and suddenly I was without a lefty to cover for me. Henry was a terrific athlete.

After 33 years of teaching music, both instrumental and vocal, in a small village in NYS, he informed me that he would be cycling to Albuquerque. “What are your plans?” He asked one morning. So of course, I immediately handed in my notice. Henry headed west, picked up a friend and fellow cyclist in Ohio, and off they went.

From then on, we followed a cycle of NY, our summer home in Quebec, Albuquerque in the fall and early winter, followed by 3 months in Florida. In each place, thanks to Henry’s musical and sports talents, we were able to meet a wide variety of wonderful people.

Henry was such a versatile, talented trombonist that we were able to easily get others to join us in our musical adventures. During the Christmas season we would gather about ten other musicians and flash mob bell ringers — usually at Hobby Lobby. What fun it was to engage small children in singing their favorite songs such as Rudolph and Frosty. Henry always had the right song for each child and adult.

Our pickleball was long and exciting. We began playing in 2004 when we were introduced to the game by pros from the Seattle area. (Pickleball Stuff). We participated in the NYS Senior Games for 39 years. In the early days before pickleball was included we would play tennis, ping pong or whatever else we could fit in. As everyone is aware, pickleball has now taken over most senior games. We managed to win most events until we were edged out by younger and better players. But we never lost our joy in just participating and meeting new people.

We first met Dale and Penny in 2010 at an off-year National Seniors Tournament in Rochester NY. There Henry took 3 golds in singles, mixed doubles, and men’s doubles. I only won 2 golds and a silver in singles.

Henry made every match a fun event, never losing his joy for the game and never criticizing anyone. That made him a perfect partner in sports and in my life. I’m sure that everyone who ever played with Henry had a good time. I know I certainly did.
